Ascending one of the Seven Summits

Mount Elbrus

Seven Summit Mount Elbrus 5642m

The Elbrus at 5642 metres is the highest point of the European continent and is one of the famous Seven Summits. The ascent from the south is due to the well-developed infrastructure and the comfortable and beautiful accommodations the most popular among mountaineers. We will climb the west summit (5.642m) which is 21m higher than the east summit. The tour takes eight days altogether, with one day planned as an extra in case of bad weather. With four or more participants the tour will be guided by Bernhard or one of our mountain guides, this guarantees German-speaking support (of course our guides also speak English). A local Russian/German speaking mountain guide, who knows the Elbrus and the surrounding area like the back of his hand will also accompany the tour, thus providing optimal support. There will be at least one mountain guide per four participants. This maximizes the chance of reaching the summit, in case a participant should wish to turn back. It also enables us to consider the different abilities of all participants. We work with the agency GoElbrus for the ascent of Elbrus. GoElbrus reliably takes care of the onsite organisation and the requirements for our visa.

Requirements

Mountaineering experience is an advantage and very helpful. The tour is particularly demanding due to the height and the glaciated summit structure. Slopes with more than 30° steepness require confident and secure walking with crampons. Although a crevasse fall is very unlikely it is necessary to be roped up for part of the walk. A strong and healthy physical condition is essential in order to master 1900 metres of altitude up to a height of 5642m on the summit. Support by a snow cat is not guaranteed. The mountain guide will accompany and support where possible, but the tour should not be regarded as guided in the classic sense (e.g. in the Alps fully supported on the mountain guide’s rope to the summit and back.

Program

Day 1:
Arrival in Mineralnye Vody. Meeting all participants and catching the transfer to Terskol in Baksan Valley (approx. 4 hrs.). Overnight stay in a hotel in double or triple bedrooms with shower/WC.

Day 2:
Acclimatisation tour to a beautiful waterfall and an observatory at 3100m. In good weather conditions there is a magnificent panoramic view to enjoy. On one side you can see the two Elbrus mountains tops and on the other side the mighty Dongus-Orun rises (duration approx. 7 hrs., +/-900m). In good weather conditions there is an option to take the ski lift to 3800 m and do a short hike to help improve height acclimatisation. Overnight stay as the day before.

Day 3:
We are going by a ski lift to a mountain hut at approx. 3.800m. Items which are not needed may be deposited at the hotel. After a short tea break, continue to the Prijut 11 and higher (approx. 4.300m). The fit and the strong can then ascend even further. The overnight stay will be in one of our modern huts (close to the old Botschki) in multi-bedrooms (approx. 3 hrs. ascent).

Day 4:
An acclimatisation ascent to the Pastuchov Rock at approx. 4.800m. Depending on the ability of participants it may be possible to ascend even further (approx. 8 hrs.) Overnight stay in our hut.

Day 5:
Recovery day and further acclimatisation to gather strength for the very challenging summit tour. Another equipment check. Available on request a short tour of the surrounding area is possible (up to approx. 4300m). Ability and weather conditions permitting, the summit ascent may also take place. The decision will be made at short notice according to the conditions. Overnight stay in our hut.

Day 6:
Summit day. We will rise early (approx. at 02:00). It can be very cold and wind, but also pleasantly mild and calm. We will leave our accommodation at approx. 03:00, to experience the sunrise at about the height of the Pastuchov Rock. It is also possible to go by snow cat to the Pastuchov Rock, depending on the group requirements. Overnight stay as the day before. Ascent approx. 10 hrs. - descent approx. 4 hrs. +/-1840hm.

Day 7:
Reserve day. If the summit ascent was successful on the 6th day, descend to the hotel in Baksan Valley and recover by going on a pleasant hike in the surrounding area. Otherwise the day will be more strenuous: ascend by snow cat to the Pastuchov Rock, climb the summit, then down to the cable car for the decent to the valley. Overnight stay in an hotel in Terskol.

Information

This adventure is connected with the alpine risks and dangers in great heights. Joining the tour, you are willing to take on an increased degree of risk and you participate as an independent mountaineer. Similar to Mont Blanc, we have to be prepared for any kind of weather. Changing from icy -30°C to piercing hot sunny weather, storms or calm...everything is possible.

Mountaineering at great heights (up to 5.600m on the summit day) means a great strain for the organism and the danger of altitude sickness cannot be excluded. Therefore, we strongly recommend getting your body accustomed to high altitudes prior to the tour by staying in an alpine hut at min. 3000m. Alternatively you can participate in one of our high alpine tours during the week before departure. You must be physically healthy and fully resilient. In case of doubt, please consult your doctor before departure.

Please consider that the organisation, accommodation, meals and means of transport in the Caucasus do not meet European standards. Weather, construction sites and generally unforeseen events or poor conditions may cause delays and changes in the programme.

What is a hut sleeping bag and what do I need it for?

A hut sleeping bag is either made of silk or cotton and is compulsory on every hut for hygienic reasons, as the duvets, pillowcases and mattress protectors cannot be washed every day. The hut sleeping bag protects you from direct contact with the blankets. We recommend a small silk hut sleeping bag with a small pack size and lighter weight.
