Program

Day 1
The starting point of our Grossglockner ascent is the Stüdlhütte (2,802 m), which we reach from the Lucknerhaus (1,918 m) in about 2–3 hours. In the evening, we meet our mountain guide for a welcome, a tour briefing and a thorough equipment check – ensuring we are perfectly prepared for the high‑alpine adventure ahead.

Day 2
Early in the morning, we rope up and ascend across the Ködnitzkees glacier towards the Erzherzog‑Johann‑Hütte (Adlersruhe). After a short break, we continue to the Glocknerleitl, a steep ice slope that we climb in crampons via several switchbacks. Higher up, we enter rocky terrain and traverse the Kleinglockner (3,771 m) in easy climbing terrain (UIAA I–II). A short descent into the famous Glocknerscharte leads us to the final ascent to the highest point in Austria.

At the summit cross of the Grossglockner (3,798 m), we enjoy an unforgettable panoramic view across the Alps – a moment that makes every step worthwhile.

We descend via the same route back to the Erzherzog‑Johann‑Hütte and continue down to the Stüdlhütte (approx. 3.5 hours). Together, we conclude an impressive and safe high‑alpine ascent of the Grossglockner.

Normal route & Stüdlgrat

Normal Route (Erzherzog‑Johann‑Hütte / Adlersruhe)

The Normal Route is the classic ascent of the Grossglockner and ideal for mountaineers looking for a safe and technically moderate high‑alpine tour. We start from the Stüdlhütte and set off early in the morning, roped up, across the Ködnitzkees glacier towards the Erzherzog‑Johann‑Hütte (Adlersruhe). After a short break, we continue towards the Glocknerleitl, a steep ice slope that we climb in crampons via several switchbacks.

Higher up, we enter easy rock terrain and traverse the Kleinglockner before descending into the famous Glocknerscharte. From here, the final ascent leads us directly to the summit. At the summit cross of the Grossglockner (3,798 m), we enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view across the entire Alpine range. The descent follows the same route back to the Stüdlhütte.

The Normal Route offers a perfect combination of glacier travel, easy climbing and stunning views – ideal for ambitious beginners and experienced mountaineers alike.

Stüdlgrat – The Alpine Classic Route

The Stüdlgrat is considered the most beautiful and at the same time one of the more demanding routes on the Grossglockner. This elegant ridge climb offers a true alpine experience and is suited for mountaineers with good fitness and solid climbing skills. We also start from the Stüdlhütte and first cross the Ködnitzkees to reach the base of the ridge.

The Stüdlgrat leads us over airy, partly exposed sections, combined with varied climbing in the UIAA II–III range. The route is well protected and offers consistently engaging climbing without being overly technical. Step by step, we gain altitude until we reach the upper section of the mountain and climb directly to the summit cross of the Grossglockner.

The descent follows the Normal Route back to the Erzherzog‑Johann‑Hütte and then to the Stüdlhütte. The Stüdlgrat is the perfect choice for those seeking a sporty, alpine and visually spectacular tour.

What is a hut sleeping bag and what do I need it for?

A hut sleeping bag is either made of silk or cotton and is compulsory on every hut for hygienic reasons, as the duvets, pillowcases and mattress protectors cannot be washed every day. The hut sleeping bag protects you from direct contact with the blankets. We recommend a small silk hut sleeping bag with a small pack size and lighter weight.
