Alpine History of the Zillertal
Hiking the Berliner Höhenweg means walking in the footsteps of true alpine history. By the mid-19th century, the Zillertal had become a cradle of mountaineering, with the village of Ginzling serving as a key hub for early alpinists. In 1879, the Berliner Hütte became the first mountain refuge built in the Zillertal. Recognized for its unique character, it has been a listed historical monument since 1997. As early as 1889, the route from the Berliner Hütte over the Schönbichler Horn to the newly built Furtschaglhaus was developed as a high alpine trail. This section laid the foundation for today’s extensive network of alpine paths. The Berliner Höhenweg leads through the heart of the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park. Expect breathtaking views of the glaciated alpine world along with fascinating insights into the natural beauty of this high-altitude landscape.
Your First 3000er
Your first 3000-meter peak is also located along the Berliner Höhenweg: the Schönbichler Horn (3,134 m) is a fantastic viewpoint offering stunning views of the Waxeggkees glacier and the Großer Möseler (3,478 m). The Großer Möseler is a classic high alpine tour, ascending from the Furtschagelhaus over the Furtschagelkees to the impressive summit. One of the most beautiful descents safely leads over the Eastern Möseler notch back to the Berliner Hütte.
Your First High Alpine Tour
For your first high alpine tour—mountaineering with crampons and an ice axe across a glacier—the Schwarzenstein (3,369 m) is an ideal choice. The summit, at 3,369 meters above sea level, can be perfectly combined with an overnight stay at the new Schwarzenstein Hut, making it a great introduction to glacier travel.
Following in the Footsteps of Peter Habeler
Your next challenge, preparing you like Peter Habeler for mountains around the world, is the Großer Löffler (3,379 m). Climbing the Großer Löffler remains one of the great alpine adventures in the Zillertal Alps. You can also symbolically meet the Zillertal alpine legend Peter Habeler at the Olperer (3,476 m), which is accessible as a day tour via the Hintertux Glacier Cable Car. The more scenic approach leads over the Olperer Hut, literally following in the footsteps of the first climbers.
Your First Alpine Trek
Your first alpine trekking tour takes you around the Olperer on the Peter Habeler Loop. The trails in this Zillertal Alps circuit are slightly more alpine than those on the Berliner Höhenweg, but the trek rewards you with magnificent mountain scenery and breathtaking views.
The Highest Peak of the Zillertal Alps
The highest peak in the Zillertal Alps is the Hochfeiler (3,510 m), which is relatively easy to summit from the Hochfeiler Hut. For experienced climbers, the Hochfeiler also offers classic ice routes on the Hochfeiler North Face, Griesferner North Face, and Hochferner North Face. The best conditions for these ice classics are typically found in spring and early summer.
