Großglockner & Großvenediger
... in the national park Hohe Tauern, 6 days
In 6 days, we climb the two most coveted peaks of Austria. The “world-old Majesty“Großvenediger (3663m) and the Großglockner (3798m), the highest mountain of Austria. The glaciated main summit of the Venediger group, is the ideal preparation for our tour highlight the Großglockner. The airy summit ridge requires some technical skill and a head for heights, the panorama of the most beautiful peaks of the Eastern Alps is breathtaking!
Meeting point at 10:00 in Ströden Hinterbichl. Here your mountain guide will greet you and check the equipment, before he goes through the tour program with you. Afterwards we will ascend through Maurer Valley to the Essener-Rostocker Hut 2207m. Ascent 800 m, time on trail approx. 3,5 hrs
Preparation tour on the glacier to the Maurer Törl 3108m – over the Obersulzbachkees into the Obersulzbachtal where we pause at the Sulzsee before starting the ascent to the Kürsinger Hut 2547m.
Ascent 1250 m, descent 900 m, time on trail approx. 9 hrs
Summit day: From the glacier of the Obersulzbachkees, we ascend to the Venedigerscharte 3407m, where we will pass massive crevasses. This is an exciting stretch. After this tricky part, we reach the summit of the Großvenediger 3666m. Awaiting us is a beautiful panorama view onto well-known summits like the Großglockner, our next goal. Over the Obererkeesboden and further over the Rainertörl 3421m, we continue down to the Defreggenhaus 2963m and further downwards to the Johannis Hut 2121m.
Ascent 1100 m, descent 1500 m, time on trail approx. 8 hrs
We are changing huts! A taxi brings us back to the cars and we drive to Kals, Lucknerhaus it is 35 km and takes roughly 45 Min. From here we will hike via Stüdl Hut 2801m and further over the Ködnitzkees to the Erzherzog-Johann-Hut on 3354m. Here we will stay for the night and enjoy a pleasant evening.
Ascent 1500 m, time on trail approx. 5 hrs
With light luggage we start the hike over the Glockner Leitl, further on to a windy ridge climbing to the summit of the Großglockner 3798m. Here we enjoy the magnificent panorama before we head back over the same route to the Erzherzog-Johann-Hut. From here we continue to the Salm Hut 2644 m, our accommodation for the night. Ascent 400 m, descent 1100 m, time on trail approx. 6,5 hrs.
From the Salm Hut we hike over an easy up and downhill path to the Glorer Hut. Here we will enjoy a little break while we review the highlights before heading down to the Lucknerhaus.
Ascent 200 m, descent 800 m, time on trail approx. 3 hrs
All important information
Mountain experience, sure-footedness and a head for heights. Experience in the use of crampons and pickaxe is advantageous. Ability of climbing routes of level 3 UIAA, and a strong physical condition for 7-9-hour hikes.
