Hohe Tauern National Park

Ski Touring days

Mountain Hotel with a cosy atmosphere & varied ski touring terrain

The Krimmler Tauernhaus provides a comfortable hut base for ski touring. Rewarding skiing mountains and the versatile ski touring terrain make it the ideal location for some amazing touring days. The Hohe Tauern with its huge cirques and partly kilometre wide valleys, offers us the exclusive pleasure of leaving our tracks on the mountain slopes. The area is framed by an impressive scenery of almost western alpine character. While the Richter hut is surrounded by granite serrated ridges connecting the numerous peaks, one looks towards the steep flanks of the Dreiherren Peak at enormous glacier crevasses.

Program

Day 1:
Your mountain guide will meet you at 11:30 at the parking lot in Krimml. After a quick equipment check the hut taxi will bring us to the Krimmler Tauernhaus (approx. one-hour drive). There we will go through the touring plan for today and start our first tour in the Krimmler Tauern. In the evening we will plan the next days, while the land lady treats us to culinary delights.

Day 2 - 4:
The vast and very versatile touring area offers daily ski tours according to the current snow and weather situation. Rosskopf 2845m, Windbachtalkogel 2843m, Rainbachspitze 3129m, Gabler 3263m are very worthwhile skiing mountains. We will do ski tour updates regarding skiing technic in powder and bad snow, basic knowledge and practise in the use of an avalanche transceiver, interpretation of the current avalanche report, planning a tour calculating alpine risks and danger, and orientation with maps and modern apps – where do I find the best snow quality for my descent.

Day 5:
The hut taxi will bring the luggage to the valley. We ascend with a light backpack to Rosskarscharte 2689m, if possible, further to Gabler 3263m where the awesome descent to Wildgerlos Valley awaits us. In mountain restaurant Finkau we bring the ski touring week to a close before the taxi takes us back to the starting point in Krimml.

FAQs

What should I bring?

Backpack, own avalanche transceiver equipment if available (is included), ski touring skis and poles, helmet (as required), snack, drink, sun protection, change of clothes. Please also check prior to your tour whether your insurance includes mountain rescue off-piste. You will receive a packing list when you make your booking.

Do I get a discount if I bring my own equipment?

You are of course welcome to use your own equipment. Unfortunately, we cannot grant a discount as we generally provide the necessary safety equipment free of charge.

What is a hut sleeping bag and what do I need it for?

A hut sleeping bag is either made of silk or cotton and is compulsory on every hut for hygienic reasons, as the duvets, pillowcases and mattress protectors cannot be washed every day. The hut sleeping bag protects you from direct contact with the blankets. We recommend a small silk hut sleeping bag with a small pack size and lighter weight.

Payment at the hut with debit card?

Payment with your debit card is rarely possible in mountain huts! It is therefore necessary to bring sufficient cash with you! Cable cars and hotels can usually be paid for with debit or credit card.

The weather forecast announces bad weather, when will a tour be cancelled / postponed?

Unfortunately, weather forecasts for the mountains are not always as accurate as one might imagine and some weather portals are simply unsuitable for forecasts in the mountains. A reliable forecast is only possible for the following three to five days. Although the 16-day forecasts in particular are popular, the significance is extremely limited. If the conditions are clearly bad and we have to cancel the tour for safety reasons, we will either arrange an alternative date together or you will get your deposit back.

What rental equipment is included in the price?

You will find the rental equipment included in the tour description under "Services & Additional Costs". Rental equipment is included in all our guided tours. We also have equipment hire - if you are out on your own but have forgotten your crampons, you can get them from us.

How do I know what equipment I need for my tour?

You will receive a packing list from us. This will help you to find out what you need for your booked tour!
