High altitude ski tour Bernese Oberland
... Ski ascent Finsteraarhorn 4274m, the highest summit of the Bernese Alps
The Bernese Oberland presents a majestic scenery of snow and rocks with breath taking views. At Concordia Plaza with an ice thickness of 900 metres, four glaciers unite to form the Great Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ski mountaineering in this magnificent mountain world is both alpinistically and technically one of the greatest destinations in the Alps for skiers. In addition to Finsteraarhorn, the highest mountain in the Bernese Alps at 4274 metres, we will climb two further four thousand metres peaks with skis. The stunning panorama from the Concordia hut over the Aletsch Glacier framed by ski mountains is a wonder of nature that one must have seen.
Our meeting point is at the train station in Grindelwald Grund, from where we go together to Jungfraujoch. A short track takes us to the Mönchsjoch hut. With a light backpack we ascend to Mönch at 4107 metres. Overnight stay at the Mönchsjoch hut. Ascent 650 metres - Descent 500 metres
Relaxed skiing over the eternal ice field. At 3400 metres we put the climbing skins on to ascend from the east to the Trugberg at 3880 metres. An impressing firn run takes us to the World Heritage Site and the Aletsch Glacier. Overnight stay at the Concordia hut on 2850 metres. Ascent 800 metres - Descent 1400 metres
Ascent over the eternal ice field to Fieschersattel and over block terrain to the Großen Fiescherhorn at 4049 metres. Descent over the imposing Fiescher glacier to the Finsteraarhorn hut on 3048 metres. Overnight stay at the hut. Ascent 1300 metres - Descent 1050 metres
We are heading off with a light backpack to Hugisattel where we deposit our ski tour equipment. With airy block climbing we reach the distinctive summit cross of Finsteraarhorn on 4274 metres. After a run down to the Fiescher glacier and an ascent to the Vorderen Galmihorn on 3505 metres we have reached our last ski tour destination in the Bernese Oberland.
