The Ortler area
The Ortler area
The beautiful Martell Valley is the starting point of this ski crossing in the Ortler mountains. Marteller, Pizzini and Branca hut are our basecamps for our summit climbs around the Ortler. If the conditions are favourable during the tour, we will also be able to reach the 3851 m high Königspitze. Delicious Italian cooking awaits us upon return from our tours.
We will meet at Gasthof Schönblick in Marteller Valley to begin our ski crossing. Once we have packed our high-alpine equipment and backpacks, we will ascend to the Zufall hut and then further to the Marteller hut at 2610 m. Here we will have time to refresh our knowledge about the use of the avalanche transceiver. Ascent 505 m.
Today we will go on an acclimatization tour to the Köllkuppe at 3326 m (marmot mountain). We’ll start in southwestern direction and in a wide left turn we’ll reach the Hohenferner. From here we will be skiing over Hohenferner glacier until we reach the summit area of Köllkuppe. Depending on the conditions we will ascend over the west ridge on foot or with skis. For the downhill run we will select the best possible snow quality and return to the Marteller hut. Ascent 782 m. – descent 798 m.
A long glacier ascent leads us from the Marteller hut over the Fürkeleferner. Our ascent track takes us steeply upwards, to where we eventually carry our skis strapped to our backpacks, over a flat shoulder onto the east ridge of the mountain. From there we go further (with crampons if necessary) along a relatively easy ridge to the highest point of the Zufallspitze at 3757 m. If we still feel motivated and fit enough, we can add the famous neighbor summit Cevedale at 3769 m to our list. The descent takes us over the Vedretta de la Mare into the wild mountain world of Refugio Larcher at 2608 m. Ascent 1250 m. – descent 1246 m.
Today’s tour destination is the Palon de la Mare at 3703 m. The ascent from the eastern side leads us over the lonely and original de la Mare glacier. Next, we orient in the direction of Monte Rosole with the Colombo bivouac located below, then we pass Col de la Mare and ascend over the north face of the glacier ridge further to the summit of Palon de la Mare at 3703 m. Here the view into the mighty Forni basin, with the famous skiing mountains Pizzo Tresoro and San Matteo unfold. The descent takes us over a wide glacier basin and finally onto a moraine ridge to the excellently run Branca hut at 2487 m. Ascent 1119 m. – descent 1237 m.
Directly behind the Branca hut we cross the Val di Rosole towards Monte Pasquale and reach depending on the conditions, on foot or with crampons the peak of Monte Pasquale at 3553 m over the west ridge. Directly in front of us rises the Königsspitze/ Gran Cebru at 3859 m it is the second highest peak in the Ortler group. The descent to the Pizzini hut is a skiing highlight. Ascent 1045 m. - descent 827 m.
From the Pizzini hut we will ascend north in an alternating gradient and finally steeply uphill over the Langenferner-Joch to the G. Casatti hut at 3254 m. In the historic hut we will enjoy a short well-earned break before we ascend to our last ski touring peak, the Eisseespitze at 3230 m. Along this stage we once more have the possibility of climbing the Monte Cevedale. From Eisseespitze over the Langerferner our awesome descent back to Martell Valley begin. Before we leave we will review our tours in Gasthof Schönblick. You are certain to go home feeling very satisfied. Ascent 711 m. – descent 1339 m.
