Ski touring in the Silvretta
...with the Piz Buin 3312m we climb the highest mountain of Vorarlberg
The most famous ski mountains in the tri-border area of the Silvretta stand splendidly side by side. For experienced ski mountaineers who appreciate comfortable huts in a dream location, this ski crossing is a true treat. The crossing of the Silvretta proposed here is just one of many possibilities to explore the ski touring paradise. Depending on snow conditions and requirements, we can also assemble an arbitrary round.
Ischgl is our meeting point for the ski touring days in Silvretta. The mountain guide from Alpine School Mountain Sports is waiting here to wish you welcome and check the equipment. Afterwards we will be skiing through the skiing area of Ischgl to Piz Val Gronda, where a beautiful descent leads us directly to the Heidelberger hut (descent 550 m.). Here we will have time to refresh our knowledge in the use of an avalanche transceiver and to do a short ski tour. Alternatively, we can also ascend through Fimbertal to the Heidelberger hut at 2304 m.
Today we will be on our way right in the middle of the mountain world of the Silvretta Alps. The Heidelberger hut is embedded in a valley basin, surrounded by countless ski tour summits. Our tour takes us past the dominating Fluchthörnern to the Breiten Krone at 3079 m, a striking peak visible from afar. After a summit break, we descend over Kronenjoch to the Jamtal hut. Ascent 815 m - descent 917 m
The high alpine ski tour over the Jamtal glacier to Hinteren Jamspitze at 3156 m is our first glacier tour. The ascent takes us in a pleasant gradient directly to Urezzajoch and then to the slightly steeper Jamjoch at 3516 m. We will reach the summit area over the firn flank and depending on the conditions: on foot or with skis through rocky terrain to the peak of Hinteren Jamspitze. Afterwards a speedy descent brings us to today’s destination, the Chamana Tuoi at 2250. Ascent 1025 m - descent 939 m
The tour today brings us to the highlight of this week, climbing the Großen Piz Buin at 3312 m. It is the third highest mountain of the Silvretta main range and the highest mountain in Vorarlberg. The ascent of our tour leads us over the scenic Plan da Mezdi and further to Fuorcala dal Cunfim at 3043 m. From here a flat crossing over the Ochsentaler glacier brings us to the ski depot at the Buin Lücke. Now it is time to put on harnesses and crampons in order to climb the last meters over a block ridge to the peak. After that we will leave our tracks coming down over the Ochsentaler glacier to the Wiesbadener hut. Ascent 1110 m - descent 914 m
Having enjoyed a relaxed and pleasant evening in the hut we will go over the Vermunt glacier to the Dreiländerspitze at 3197 m. The last 70 meters let us climb an airy ridge to the peak. Then a descent over Obere Ochsenscharte and the wide Jamtal glacier takes us to the Jamtal hut. Here we will have time for a break bevor we descend to Galtür where a taxi brings us back to our starting point in Ischgl. Time to say goodbye and start the journey home. Ascent 773 m - descent 1052 m
