Ski touring trip to Antarctica
Ski-touring trip to Antarctica
The Antarctic Peninsula, which by Antarctic standards is relatively easily accessible, has an astonishing array of creatures and an unforgettable landscape. There is an unbelievable variety of penguins, seabirds, seals, and whales; icebergs float by the ship. Historic research stations remind us of the great arctic explorers. And most importantly: the endless possibilities for unforgettable ski tours!
A combination of a cruise and ski-touring weeks: during our ski tours and shore excursions, our cruise ship will be anchored, and we will be brought ashore by dinghies.
Ski tourers with an adventurous spirit. You need experience in ski touring and physical fitness adequate for the all-day tours
We will fly to Ushuaja in Argentina / Tierra del Fuego, where all the formalities will be handled first. Then, we will board our cruise ship and sail in the direction of the Beagle Channel. We will cross the Drake Passage and reach Deception Island, one of the South Shetland Islands. The volcano on the island was last active in 1970. After entering the natural harbor, we will hike on the volcano and swim in the hot springs. Our first ski tour starts from Neko Harbor in Paradise Bay. Then, we will visit a penguin colony and the Almirante Brown Station.
Ski tour on Anvers and Wenke Island. In Port Lockroy, we will visit a research station, a museum, and a large Adelie penguin colony. We will continue through the Lemaire Channel. Mt. Scott, Mt. Demaria, and Mt. Mill offer beautiful ski touring opportunities. An interesting day will be had with a visit to the Ukrainian Vernadsky research station. Along the Graham Coast, the "iceberg straits", we will reach the Crystal Sound. We will return north: through the Drake Passage, past the cliffs of Cape Horn in the direction of the mainland. Once back in Ushuaia, we will leave the ship and check back into the hotel.
